To combat the increased risk of springtime wildfires, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) enforces an annual burn ban from March 16 through May 14. Since its inception in 2009, this critical policy has successfully reduced spring wildfire occurrences by approximately 43%, targeting the single largest cause of fires: the open burning of debris and brush. While the ban prohibits the burning of sticks, branches, and yard waste during these dry months, small, supervised campfires and cooking fires—under 3x4 feet—are still permitted. By adhering to these regulations and reducing open debris burning, residents can protect communities and help prevent the spread of wildfires across the state 🔥🪵🔥
